A Classroom on the Move: Dean Weixing Hu (Richard) Leads the Fourth DPA Students to Visit the China-Portuguese Forum

On October 26, Professor Weixing Hu, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau, led the fourth cohort of DPA (Doctor of Public Administration) students to visit the China-Portuguese Forum (Macau). Accompanying him were six professors, including Professor Yonghong Wu, Head of the Department of Government and Public Administration, and Professor Bo Wen, Programme Director. They were warmly welcomed by Mr. Xianzheng Ji, Secretary-General of the China-Portuguese Forum (Macau), and Ms. Ying Xie, Deputy Secretary-General.

The visit began with Secretary-General Ji leading the group to view the exhibits of the 16th China-Portuguese National Cultural Week, introducing the origins, styles, and meanings of the various artworks. The diverse and distinctive paintings from different countries captivated the attention of the teachers and students, who paused to appreciate and take photos.

After the tour, Deputy Secretary-General Xie introduced the history of the China-Portuguese Forum (Macau) and highlighted Macau’s role as a platform in its development. The Forum was established in 2003, with a permanent secretariat set up in Macau in 2004. Officially founded in October 2003, it is organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and hosted by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, with participation from nine Portuguese-speaking countries, including Angola, Brazil, and Cape Verde, covering all countries where Portuguese is an official language. To date, the Forum has held six ministerial meetings, making it the highest-level international conference currently held in Macau. Macau plays an increasingly important role as a platform in the economic and trade exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Following this, Secretary-General Ji further discussed the achievements of the Forum since its inception and welcomed questions from the attending faculty and students. The DPA students expressed their sincere gratitude and keen interest in the presentations by Secretary-General Ji and Deputy Secretary-General Xie, actively engaging in discussions and asking questions, which led to a lively exchange.

Finally, Dean Hu expressed heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau for the warm reception from Secretary-General Ji and others, presenting them with a souvenir from the university. A group photo was taken, marking the successful conclusion of the visit.

The DPA program at the University of Macau aims to cultivate advanced public administration management talents, public policy research professionals, and teaching staff in public administration for the Greater China region (particularly the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area), enhancing public governance standards in Macau and beyond. Currently, there are no DPA programs offered in mainland China; this program is the first in the country conducted in Chinese. Unlike the PhD programs that emphasize academic training, the DPA is practice-oriented, focusing on the integration of theory and practice and the ability to solve real-world public administration issues, fostering application-oriented talents that balance theory and practice. A “classroom on the move” is one of the features of the DPA program, allowing students to broaden their horizons and enrich their learning materials through field visits.
