Introduction
The Public Administration Specilization allows undergraduate majors the opportunity to study in depth the theories, history and develop the skills and substantive knowledge for a career in public administration. This curriculum provides a strong foundation for a career in government, NGOs or for further study in law or public administration.
After completing the first-year sequence required of all majors in the Government and Public Administration program, students may elect to pursue the Public Administration Stream at the beginning of their second year. Subsequently, they take courses that focus on the management of public sector organizations, such as Organizational Behavior, Public Finance, and Administrative Law. All students are required to take a certain number of electives offered by the Department of Government and Public Administration and to fulfill breadth requirements by taking courses offered by other departments at the University. In the fourth year of the program, all students are required to undertake a semester-long independent study under the supervision of a faculty advisor, which culminates in the production of a research paper that is orally defended before an examination committee. The independent study gives students the opportunity to draw on the analytical skills and substantive knowledge gained earlier in the program.
