Professor Luis Tomé Discusses Future Cooperation with University of Macau

On 11 February 2025, Professor Luis Tomé, the head of the Faculty of International Relations at Autonomous University of Lisbon (Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa / UAL), Portugal, and a distinguished scholar at the University of Macau, met with Professor Richard Weixing Hu, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) at the University of Macau (UM), and Professor Yonghong Wu, the head of the Department of Government and Public Administration (DGPA) at FSS/UM. The meetings focused on exploring future cooperation in the areas of China-European Union relations and China-Portuguese-speaking countries relations.

During the discussions, both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening academic and research ties between their institutions. They identified several key areas for potential collaboration, including joint research projects, academic publications, and teaching initiatives. The aim is to leverage the unique strengths and expertise of both universities to foster a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics between China, the European Union, and Portuguese-speaking countries.

As the University of Macau is an associated partner of the DIVERSE academic alliance, the meeting also reviewed possible collaborations within this framework. The DIVERSE alliance, known for its commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education, offers a platform for member institutions to engage in collaborative research, share best practices, and develop innovative teaching methodologies. Professor Tomé and Professor Hu discussed how their respective institutions could contribute to and benefit from the alliance’s initiatives.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement toward actively pursuing these collaborative opportunities. Both Professor Tomé and Professor Hu expressed optimism about the potential for their institutions to work together on projects that would not only advance academic knowledge but also contribute to the broader goals of international cooperation and understanding.

This meeting marks a significant step forward in the relationship between Autonomous University of Lisbon (Portugal) and the University of Macau. By fostering closer ties and collaborative efforts, both institutions aim to enhance their contributions to the fields of international relations and global studies, particularly in the context of China-European Union and China-Portuguese-speaking countries relations.
