Prof. Luis Tomé, Professor, Autónoma University of Lisbon
Luis Tomé is Full Professor at Autónoma University of Lisbon (UAL), where he is Head for Internationalization, Director of the International Relations Department and its research unit OBSERVARE–Observatory of Foreign Relations, and Coordinator of the PhD in International Relations: Geopolitics and Geoeconomics. Senior Researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations of Nova University of Lisbon (IPRI-Nova). He has been a visiting professor at La Sapienza Universitá di Roma – Italy, the Middle East Technical University (METU) of Ankara-Turkey, National Defense Institute of East Timor, as also at the Portuguese Military University Institute (IUM), National Defense Institute (IDN) and Higher Institute of Police Sciences and Homeland Security (ISCPSI). Prof. Luis Tomé was Special Adviser for International Relations and Counter-Terrorism in the Office of the Minister of Internal Affairs (Nov. 2015 – Oct. 2017); Special Adviser to the Vice-President of the European Parliament (1999-2004); and NATO Researcher for two years, authoring the report “Russia and NATO’s Enlargement” (2000). Researcher in the areas of International Relations, Geopolitics and Security Studies specialising in the Euro-Atlantic, Eurasian and Asia-Pacific regions, he is the author of more than a dozen books and numerous essays and articles published in specialized journals. He has been a guest speaker at high-level conferences and collaborates regularly with various media outlets, analysing and commenting on international politics and security issues.
Abstract:
A research seminar is pivotal in academic and professional development, fostering an environment conducive to intellectual exchange and collaborative learning. It serves as a platform for researchers, students, and professionals to present their findings, share innovative ideas, and receive constructive feedback from peers and experts. A seminar focused on Portuguese-speaking countries is particularly significant for deepening understanding and fostering collaboration among scholars. It encourages collaborative strategies and innovation across diverse fields, including historical and cultural connections, economy and trade, social and political development, language and education, and international relations. This seminar addresses topics and insights that contribute to collective research progress and the promotion of Portuguese as a global language of knowledge and diplomacy, highlighting common challenges and opportunities. Additionally, it aims to promote joint reflection on the interactions between research focused on Portuguese-speaking countries and the realms of science diplomacy, education diplomacy, and innovation diplomacy.
